Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic has been voted Footballer of the Year in the USA, and is the youngest player ever to have been given the accolade. The 19-year-old received 94% of the votes, reports kicker sports magazine.

"It is really a great honour. I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. I would never have imagined that something like this could happen", said the Dortmund man, who has scored six goals and provided four assists in nine games for the US national team in 2017. His overall statistics while wearing the national kit speak for themselves too: he has scored nine goals in 20 international fixtures.

In a year in which the USA failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Pulisic was one of the few players to whom no blame could be apportioned for this.

Pulisic received 94% of the votes in a vote in which association and club coaches, current and former national team players as well as media representatives participated.

The hitherto youngest US Footballer of the Year had been the former Leverkusen and Munich player, Landon Donovan, who received the award in 2003 at the age of 21. The vote has been conducted each year since 1984. Last season, the accolade was given to Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC).
