Eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund have signed 17-year-old Spanish youth international Sergio Gómez from FC Barcelona on a long-term deal after paying the buyout clause in the player’s contract.

Gomez, who was voted the second-best player at the U17 World Cup in India and scored four goals at the tournament as Spain finished second, is a strong dribbler with an eye for goal and a great understanding of the game. He offers options from set-pieces and can play in a range of positions in attacking midfield.

“Sergio Gómez is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world for his age group. We have been interested in him for some time and are happy that he has decided to join Borussia Dortmund despite receiving offers from many of Europe’s top clubs. Sergio will train with the first team and get match practice with the U19s until the summer,” explained BVB’s Sporting Director Michael Zorc.

Gomez, who came through the ranks at Barcelona’s legendary La Masia academy and names Spain international Andrés Iniesta as his idol (“Not just a great footballer, but above all a special person”), said: “I would like to thank Borussia Dortmund for this opportunity that has been offered to me here at one of the big European clubs. In all honesty: I just want to get stuck in straightaway, starting with my first training session on Sunday.
