Patrick Owomoyela is set to follow in the footsteps of fellow former Black & Yellows Karlheinz Riedle, 52, and Jörg Heinrich, 48, by returning to Borussia Dortmund. The 38-year old will represent the eight-time German champions as an international ambassador.

"Patrick Owomoyela was part of a successful era at our club. He became a German champion, a double-winner and was part of the squad that reached the 2013 Champions League final," said BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke. "It's great to have Owo back with us again, especially with Jörg Heinrich already fulfilling another important position within Peter Stöger's coaching staff."

Owomoyela, who bade a highly emotional farewell to the fans in May 2013 ("I am delighted that I was able to be a part of all this"), is looking forward to his new role. "I'm happy to again be becoming an active part of the Black & Yellow family, especially as my heart has always been here!"

The defender joined BVB in 2008 and made 84 competitive appearances in the Klopp era, scoring three goals. The 11-time Germany international became a Bundesliga winner with Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012, as well as claiming a DFB Cup winner's medal in 2012. The 38-year-old will combine his new duties for BVB with his work for the DFL's overseas marketing department ("I work there as a co-commentator and presenter of my own interview format called Owo meets"). "Being able to represent this club, my club, on the international stage makes me proud, and I'm looking forward to the interesting trips and tasks ahead."
