Borussia Dortmund inflicted a first defeat of the season upon Alalanta in the Round of 32. On Thursday (kick-off 21:05 CET), they will need to replicate that feat and end FC Salzburg's unbeaten run by recording a win in which they score at least twice if they are to reach the quarter-finals.

The scenario

  • Having lost the first leg 2-1 at home, Borussia Dortmund will need to win the return leg in Salzburg and score at least twice in the process. A 1-0 victory would see them eliminated on away goals, while a 2-1 triumph would mean extra-time. Should they win 2-0 or record a victory in which they score three times, BVB would reach the last eight.
  • In the event that Dortmund are winning 2-1 after 120 minutes, the tie will be decided in a penalty shootout: Salzburg were knocked out in this way by Dynamo Minsk in 2015/16; BVB beat AJ Auxerre and Rangers from the spot in 1993 and 1995 respectively, before suffering shootout defeats to Club Brugge in 2003 and Udinese in 2008.
  • Hwang Hee-Chan, Munas Dabbur, Xaver Schlager, Stefan Lainer, Duje Ćaleta-Car (all Salzburg) and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Ömer Toprak, André Schürrle and Julian Weigl (all BVB) are one yellow card away from missing the quarter-final first leg should their teams make it.

FC Salzburg facts

  • Austria's champions – the last reigning champions left in the competition – are unbeaten in their last 18 matches on the European stage (11 wins, 7 draws).
  • During this time they have remained unbeaten in eight home games (6 wins, 2 draws) and conceded only two goals in the process.
  • On the nine previous occasions Salzburg have won the first leg away, they have always reached the next round.

Borussia Dortmund facts

  • Borussia Dortmund have only failed to score in one of their previous 10 away games in European competition – in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 versus Benfica, when they lost the first leg 1-0. They scored a total of 16 goals in those 10 games.
  • In their nine previous European matches this season the Black & Yellows have always scored – but always conceded at least once too.
  • BVB have always prevailed in their previous clashes with clubs from Austria. They knocked out Austria Vienna in 2003 (3-1 aggregate win) and Wolfsberger AK in 2015 (6-0 aggregate win).
  • In both those ties, Borussia won the away match in Austria. They most recently beat Wolfsberg 1-0 in Klagenfurt on 30 July 2015, having previously defeated Austria Vienna 2-1 in the capital on 25 September 2003. (br)
