Borussia Dortmund's U17 side have followed up their victories in 1984, 1993, 1996, 1998, 2014 and 2015 with a seventh German B-Youth Championship title! The BVB youngsters claimed a 3-2 (1-1) win over reigning champions FC Bayern Munich courtesy of an Immanuel Pherai brace followed by a late winner from Youssoufa Moukoko.

Coach Sebastian Geppert's charges made the trip to Bavaria without the injured quartet of Pascal Thesen, Reda Khadra, Niclas Knoop and Luca Unbehaun. Yet they made a bright start to the match and created the first major goalscoring chance after just 60 seconds when Felix Schlüsselburg headed a crossed free-kick narrowly wide of the left post.

Watched on by a sell-out crowd of 2,500 fans at a sold-out FC Bayern Youth Campus, including Dortmund executives Hans-Joachim Watzke and Matthias Sammer and their Bayern counterparts Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß, the best two U17 teams in Germany delivered a high-octane encounter from the very first whistle. Bayern began to dominate the match with around ten minutes on the clock but could count themselves lucky that Alaa Bakir failed to pick out the completely unmarked Youssoufa Moukoko following a 16th-minute counter-attack. At the other end, BVB narrowly escaped conceding after Benedict Hollerbach was denied by the inside of the post (20).

Pherai shows dynamism and awareness to open scoring

The deadlock was broken barely a minute later, however, when Moukoko received a pass from midfield and spotted Immanuel Pherai in a better position. He fed his team-mate, who burst through before coolly steering a shot from a narrow angle into the net to claim the opener on the 21-minute mark. For Youth Coordinator Lars Ricken, the opening goal "came at a slightly surprising time. We had had two very good chances but Bayern had been restricting us". Only six minutes later the hosts equalised thanks to a tidy, well-placed shot from 15 metres out by Joshua Zirkzee.

Pherai restores lead, Bayern level again quickly

The Black & Yellows re-established their one-goal cushion with an outstanding strike one minute before half-time. Malte Wengerowski fizzed a cross from the right wing into the six-yard box towards Pherai, whose technically perfect flick crossed the line to make it 2-1. The lead only lasted five minutes again, though, after Jan Herrmann converted a penalty awarded for handball (48).

While Bayern enjoyed the upper hand in the opening half, the second period was a balanced, fast-paced half that continued to produce a lot of intense challenges. Both teams wanted the win that would see them claim the title.

Moukoko pokes home the third

Goalscorer Youssoufa Moukoko was largely kept at bay by the Bayern rearguard until shortly before the final whistle, but then he scored! The dynamic Pherai was initially denied by goalkeeper Mayer, but Moukoko was in the right place at the right time and poked home his 40th goal of the season to make it 3-2.

There was more drama in the closing stages as Örs and Zirkzee were both sent off. Then came six minutes of added time, in which Hawkins headed narrowly wide of the BVB goal (80+3) – then the Black & Yellow celebrations began!

By claiming their seventh German Championship title in the U17 category, Borussia Dortmund drew level with previous record holders VfB Stuttgart. BVB had reached the final as winners of the Bundesliga West pool, before claiming a 3-1 aggregate victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the semi-final. Bayern had got there thanks to a 5-0 aggregate win over Rasenballsport Leipzig.
