The Borussia Dortmund U23s' return to Regionalliga West action after a three-and-a-half week hiatus ended in defeat as a late goal by Patrick Schikowski in the 85th minute saw them beaten 1-0 (0-0) at SC Wiedenbrück.

The second away game of the fledgling Regionalliga season saw the Borussia Dortmund U23s suffer their first defeat. Head coach Jan Siewert's squad was bolstered by reinforcements from the first-team squad, with Alexander Isak, Julian Weigl, Dzenis Burnic and Sergio Gomez all included in the starting XI.

BVB controlled the opening minutes, dominating possession and creating the first promising opportunities. Only five minutes had elapsed when the chance to break the deadlock fell to Luca Kilian from a corner − and the visitors continued to assert their superiority, while the hosts had little possession and were often chasing the ball. The game was played at a very high tempo and so both teams cooled off after around a quarter of an hour, but the game was sparked into life again by a long-range effort from Zlatko Muhovic that was well stopped by BVB custodian Oelschlägel.

Wiedenbrück's belief grew and they created the next chance after around 20 minutes when Daniel Schaal's shot struck the side-netting but, with BVB seeming to be lacking purpose, the intensity tailed off in the following minutes. Most of the play towards the end of the first period took place between the two penalty areas, but the Black & Yellows did create a chance to open the scoring two minutes before the interval, though Alexander Isak, Sören Dieckmann and Sergio Gomez all failed to beat Wiedenbrück goalkeeper Hölscher in quick succession and the first period ended goalless.

The first good opportunity of the second period fell to Borussia Dortmund on the 50-minute mark when a Dzenis Burnic free-kick clipped the woodwork and sailed over. Meanwhile, the hosts looked considerably livelier after the restart and Daniel Latkowski had two shooting opportunities within the first few minutes as the match became more hectic in the Jahnstadion in Wiedenbrück.

Then, in the 85th minute, the BVB youngsters were hit by a counter that cost them the match. The pacey Daniel Schaal picked out striker Daniel Latkowski, who was left completely unimpeded to put the hosts 1-0 up. All attempts by the Black & Yellows in the closing stages could not produce an equaliser and prevent the first loss of the campaign.

However, they have little time for frustration. Their next game in hand will be played on Wednesday, with Oberhausen the opposition. Kick-off at the Rote Erde Stadion will be at 19:30 CET.
