It was a fond farewell. Roman Weidenfeller has gone out from the world of professional football with a bang. With 70,109 passionate fans watching in the stands, the goalkeeper kept out two penalties and even scored two goals.

''I'm really grateful to all my colleagues, all my teammates and, of course, all you fans.'' These were the words that resounded throughout the stadium as Roman Weidenfeller gave his farewell speech. Making his return to the touchline for the evening, Jürgen Klopp said, ''Once more, the club showed what makes it special today. When 70,000 people come together to watch old men have a kickabout, there must be a special reason behind it. Today that reason was Roman Weidenfeller.''
