Borussia Dortmund beat 1. FC Nuremberg 7-0 on Matchday 5 – their third victory in as many home games this season – to move back into second spot in the Bundesliga table. Marco Reus netted his 99th and 100th goals for the club, while Jacob Bruun Larsen, Achraf Hakimi and Manuel Akanji scored their first.

Boris Rupert reporting

The 75,700 spectators in attendance at Signal Iduna Park saw a BVB side that was superior in every respect and did not give 1. FC Nuremberg an inch, continuing their impressive home run against “Der Club” thanks to goals from Bruun Larsen (9), Reus (32, 58), Hakimi (49), Akanji (74), Jadon Sancho (85) and Julian Weigl (88).

The scenario:
Third-placed BVB, who had kicked off their campaign with two home wins and two away draws, were up against eighth-placed Nuremberg, who had followed up their unlucky opening-day defeat with two draws. The hosts had the better head-to-head record, having won each of their last five home games against "Der Club". FCN last scored in Dortmund in 2006 and last won there in 1990.

Personnel matters:
Lucien Favre was still without the injured duo of Guerreiro and Toprak, while Diallo was suspended. Alcácer, however, was back among the substitutes. There were five changes to the team that drew 1-1 in Hoffenheim last Saturday: Hakimi (BVB debut), Zagadou (first appearance this season), Delaney, Bruun Larsen and Philipp replaced Piszczek, Dahoud, Kagawa (all substitutes), Diallo (red card) and Wolf (rested and not in squad).

Tactics:
The much-changed Black & Yellows took to the field in their usual 4-2-3-1 system, with the four attacking players frequently switching positions and creating space on the flanks for the full-backs to get forward. When their opponents had the ball, BVB reverted to a 4-4-2 system, while Nuremberg opted for a compact 5-3-2 formation and aimed to keep the gaps between the lines to a minimum so as to leave the Black & Yellows as little space as possible.

The match & analysis:
The Black & Yellows delivered a dominant display from the off and took an early ninth-minute lead when Pulisic made an explosive run towards the box from a centre-right position and perfectly timed a toe-poked pass into the path of Bruun Larsen. The Dane latched onto the loose ball and executed an exquisite lob inside the far post from the corner of the six-yard box. It was excellent link-up play from the youngsters, aged 19 and 20 respectively, who twice became champions together at youth level.

Reus had the chance to double the advantage two minutes later when the ball unexpectedly landed at his feet inside the box following a failed clearance, but his shot from 12 metres out was denied by the brilliant reactions of Bredlow in the FCN goal. A long-range strike from the captain was turned away for a corner only seconds later.

Borussia clearly in control

Aside from a couple of half chances for Kubo (14) and Misidjan, who hit the side-netting in the 18th minute, the new-look BVB defence looked solid and even initiated the third goal when Zagadou played a precise long ball forward in the 32nd minute. Pulisic and Philipp quickly interchanged passes to tee up Reus, whose shot from 16 metres was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Margreitter. But the Nuremberg defender did deny a potential third goal on the stroke of half-time when he blocked Philipp's effort, meaning BVB went in with a comfortable two-goal cushion at the break. With more shots (9-2), possession (70 percent) and tackles won (54 percent), it was a highly deserved lead.

Borussia continued to dominate proceedings after the break and repeatedly switched the rhythm and tempo to good effect. The third goal came about when a Nuremberg corner was cleared and Reus broke on the counter. The captain spotted the 19-year-old loan signing Hakimi to his right and the Morocco international kept his composure as he received the ball in the box, waiting for the gap to open up and placing his shot in the far corner (49).

The fourth goal was a sight to behold. Delaney lofted a long ball from the halfway line towards Reus, who played a quick one-two with Bruun Larsen inside the box before coolly steering the return pass into the corner to claim his 100th competitive goal for the club (58). Shortly afterwards, he and Witsel made way for Kagawa and Weigl, with Akanji taking the armband. And the Swiss international soon made it 5-0 when he dispossessed a hesitant Nuremberg defender in his own box before sidestepping an opponent and drilling the ball past Bredlow (74).

But there were more goals to come as Delaney played two top passes that led to the sixth and seventh goals. Sancho was played through and coolly slotted home the sixth from 20 metres, then turned provider for the seventh when he cut the ball back from the left flank to Weigl, whose shot from 17 metres took a slight deflection on its way into the net (88).
