It was an honour for Roman Bürki when football magazine "Kicker" recently rated him as the best Bundesliga goalkeeper of the first half of the season, in their famous "German Football Rankings". Bürki wants to maintain his good form in 2019 and will therefore concentrate fully on BVB for the time being. As far as the Swiss national team is concerned, the 28-year-old has been put on standby with immediate effect.

"It has always been a topic that is close to my heart and it is a great honour to represent my country," stressed Bürki. His decision not to play for the Swiss team until further notice, or at least in the European qualifiers in 2019, was according to him, "Nothing against the national team, it was to be able to focus more on BVB and my health. In addition, it is also important for me to give younger goalkeepers the chance to gain experience alongside international players and to benefit from the training of national coach Vladimir Petkovic and in particular, goalkeeping coach Patrick Foletti."

Regarding his decision and motives, representatives from the Swiss national team stated several weeks ago that, "He has shown his international class in the Champions League," which was attested by "Kicker".

It should also be mentioned that if the Swiss team were to find themselves in a situation where they were short of goalkeepers or where the training staff decided to use an alternative, then Bürki would of course answer the call, should he be required by the Swiss national team.
