"Crazy!" said Kevin Großkreutz as he was asked for his reaction to the DFB Cup draw. Borussia Dortmund will face their former player, who now lines up for third-tier KFC Uerdingen, in the opening round of the competition.

The Dortmund native and avowed BVB fan played for the club between 2009 and 2015, winning two German Bundesliga titles (2011 and 2012) and the DFB Cup (2012) as well as reaching the UEFA Champions League final (2013). Großkreutz, who won the World Cup in 2014, has been playing for KFC Uerdingen, who finished 11th in the third division last term, since the summer of 2018.

The fixture will be played between Friday 9 August and Monday 12 August, presumably in the Merkur-Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, where KFC Uerdingen will be playing their home games during the 2019/20 season. Their usual home, the Grotenburg-Stadion, is to undergo renovation.

Borussia Dortmund have faced KFC or their predecessor club Bayer 05 Uerdingen in the DFB Cup on three previous occasions. Their first cup clash came in February 1980, when BVB won 2-0 in the Round of 16; the second, a 3-3 draw in Uerdingen in 1987/88, forced a replay in Dortmund, where the visitors prevailed 2-1; and the third was a comfortable 3-0 home win for BVB in September 1995.
