Borussia Dortmund are mourning the loss of Dr. Werner Müller. The deputy chairman of the BVB supervisory board passed away in Essen in the early hours of Wednesday morning at the age of 73. He leaves behind his wife and two adult children.

Dr. Müller was the Federal Minister of Economics and Technology between 1998 and 2002, during which time he also temporarily served as the Federal Finance Minister (1999). He then became the chief executive of Ruhrkohle AG/Evonik Industries AG (2003-2008), chairman of the supervisory board at Deutsche Bahn AG (2005-2010) and chief executive of the RAG Foundation (December 2012-May 2018).

Dr. Müller has been a member of the Borussia Dortmund advisory board since 2006. He became a member of the supervisory board on 24 November 2014 and became its deputy chairman on 23 November 2015.

"With the death of Werner Müller, BVB has lost an outstanding personality who has done extraordinary work for our club," explained a deeply moved Hans-Joachim Watzke. The CEO added: "I personally have lost a very close confidant, whose counsel and support I have always been able to rely on. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to visit Werner Müller in his last week. My deepest sympathies go to his lovely wife as well as his two children and his grandchildren. I will never forget Werner Müller, what a wonderful character!"
