It looked like BVB were on their way to a home win in front of a decent crowd of 1,463 fans at the Rote Erde when Joseph Boyamba fired the U23s into the lead after fifteen minutes. But in the end, BVB slipped to a 2-1 defeat against a resolute Lippstadt side.

League table situation before the game: On Matchday 10, BVB sit in seventh place in the table. The visitors from East Westphalia lie in a lowly 17th position and are embroiled in a relegation battle with only nine points.

Team news: BVB coach Mike Tullberg made three changes to the side that beat RW Oberhausen. Lars Bünning returned straight into the starting eleven after two months out with injury, along with Tobias Raschl and Maximilian Hippe. Leonardo Balerdi and Kolbeinn Finnsson are away with their national teams and Marco Hober starts on the bench.

First half action: The black and yellows started in their usual 4-3-3 formation with Mateu Morey as left-back and the usual offensive front free with Boyamba, Tigges and Führich. It was Chris Führich who had the first good chance after only seven minutes. After Tobi Raschl's cross, Führich forced Lippstadt's goalkeeper Balkenhoff into a save, but Steffen Tigges could not fire home the rebound as the goalkeeper spilled. His striker partner up front Joseph Boyamba enjoyed more success after a quarter of an hour of the game. Raschl anticipated a diagonal ball from Lippstadt’s centre-back Liehr and played in Joseph Boyamba, who opened the scoring from ten metres past goalkeeper Balkenhoff.

Only after midway through the first half, did the visitors venture into the Dortmund half. Out of nowhere, Marius Kröner equalised for Lippstadt from a suspiciously offside position. The Dortmund defence could not get a grip on Lippstadt’s midfield playmaker Arenz, who sent his teammate clean through on the BVB goal with a magnificent pass. The equaliser turned the game on its head somewhat. Lippstadt came into the game more and BVB could not manage to dominate the game like they had at the start. In the meantime, the visitors came closer to adding a second goal than BVB - but the two sides went into the break locked at 1-1.

The second half: At the beginning of the second half BVB again took the game by the scruff of the neck. Although, Tullberg’s side enjoyed more possession, they failed to create many clear goal scoring chances. After a good hour’s shift, Lars Bünning’s comeback was over for the day. The central defender was replaced by Steven Ruprecht. However, Ruprecht had been on the pitch for less than three minutes when he and his defensive colleagues conceded the second goal. Kevin Hoffmeier put the visitors 2-1 ahead from close range at the back post following a cross from the right hand side.

BVB coach Mike Tullberg responded to falling behind by bringing on a new attacker in the shape of Marco Hober. A few minutes later, striker Emre Aydinel also entered the fray with a view to increasing the quality in attack. But in the end BVB ran out of time, Lippstadt defended resolutely and waited for their chance on the counterattack. In the end, BVB lacked penetration and have to be accused of not doing enough despite taking the lead.

BVB coach Mike Tullberg said: "We started well in the opening 20 minutes, just as we had wanted to. However, time and time again, we allowed Lippstadt opportunities after making simple mistakes in our build up play. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the final minutes of the game were the worst so far this season. The opponent wanted it more today. Lippstadt’s winning goal was fantastic and therefore it is also in the end a deserved victory."

Next game: Next Saturday, the U23s play away at Bonner SC (1430 kickoff).
