Toni da Silva and Jörg Kühl might have been voted Player of the Tournament and Goalkeeper of the Tournament respectively, but BVB had to settle for fourth place at the Oldies Tournament at the Weser-Ems-Halle in Oldenburg.

Having beaten FC Twente Enschede and eventual finalists Werder Bremen 3-1 and 5-3 respectively in the group stage, Günter Kutowski's charges were eliminated following a 4-0 semi-final defeat to hosts VfB Oldenburg. The Black & Yellows then lost the third-place play-off 6-3 to Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Lars Müller forced off with an injury. Giovanni Federico netted four goals throughout the tournament to finish as the top goalscorer for BVB.
