Borussia Dortmund are mourning the passing of one of the greatest players in the club's history. With his family by his side, Hans Tilkowski passed away on Sunday following a long battle with illness. He was 84.

The goalkeeper was part of the BVB side that won the DFB Cup in 1965 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1966. His name shall forever be associated with one of the most famous goals in football history, scored by England forward Geoff Hurst against Germany at London's Wembley Stadium in the 101st minute of the 1966 World Cup final.

Chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke said of the former BVB shot-stopper: "Hans Tilkowski was an extremely successful and consistently flawless sportsman who was known for his social involvement." BVB president Dr. Reinhard Rauball added: "In Hans Tilkowski, German football has lost a sportsman who was highly regarded internationally. At Borussia Dortmund, he made football history as BVB beat Liverpool in the 1966 final to become the first German team to win a European trophy. Tilkowski played a decisive part with his saves in the final and the preceding rounds. The BVB family are mourning the loss of a wonderful person and would like to send our condolences to his family."
