After a 4-2 win against Feyenoord Rotterdam earlier on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund slipped to defeat in the second friendly of the day. The Black & Yellows lost 0-2 against Bundesliga rivals Mainz 05. New signing Erling Haaland came on for the second half and made his debut for the Black & Yellows.

BVB coach Lucien Favre opted for a 4-3-3 formation for the second warm game Thorgan Hazard and Paco Alcácer both made the starting eleven against the 05ers, despite only partially training during the first few days in Marbella. New signing Erling Haaland took his place on the bench but came on as a substitute for the start of the second half.

Brandt goes close, Onisiwo scores

Mainz, who selected their strongest team a week before the start of the second half of the season, started the game the better of the two sides. Pierre Kunde had the first chance of the game after two minutes after a slip from Brandt, but a last-ditch Dortmund defensive leg was able to intervene and block for a corner. FSV continued to be the better team up until a Mateta goal from an offside position in the 12th minute, before BVB began to increasingly take a grip on the game.

The first big chance was still a long time coming. In the 36th minute, Hazard found the onrushing Brandt, who evaded Niakhaté, but could not find a way past goalkeeper Zentner in a one-on-one. Shortly afterwards, Mainz striker Karim Onisiwo did much better and put the Rheinhessen into the lead on the stroke of half time.

Mainz steps up a gear - Not enough from BVB

The second half started with the BVB debut of the Norwegian Erling Haaland. The striker replaced Jacob Bruun Larsen and formed a partnership in attack alongside Paco Alcácer in a slightly modified system. This remained the only positive at first, because shortly afterwards Aaron Martín’s corner kick found the head of captain Moussa Niakhaté (54), who nodded into the net to make the scoreline 0-2 from BVB's perspective. Alexandru Maxim even had the opportunity in the 75th minute to add a third goal for the 05ers.

Haaland enjoyed the best chance to reduce the arrears, but the Norwegian missed a goal on debut as Mainz goalkeeper Müller parried his attempt from close range. Nico Schulz had played in the 19-year-old with a low cross from the left flank. Two minutes later, Haaland missed again, but the angle from which the striker was forced to shoot was very acute. Therefore, the score staged at 0-2 in the final warm up game before the Bundesliga restart.

The only thing remaining for the Black & Yellows in the training camp in Marbella is a regenerative session on Sunday morning. After lunch, BVB will fly home from Malaga airport. Things will get serious on Saturday week (kick off 15:30 CET) when BVB travels to play FC Augsburg to start the second half of the season.
