Borussia's U19s are out of the UEFA Youth League after losing 3-1 at Derby County. The team reacted well and showed spirit after falling two goals behind early in the second half, halving the deficit through Reda Khadra. But they were dealt a knock-out blow in the fifth minute of stoppage time when the Rams added a third on the counter.

The Black & Yellows, captained by Tobias Raschl, produced a particularly good performance in the first half. Youssoufa Moukoko, Alaa Bakir and Ansgar Knauff had good opportunities to open the scoring, while at the other end the English side's threat was largely limited to free-kicks and corners.

Eiran Cashin opened the scoring following a corner in the 47th minute – although referee Kevin Clancy should not have allowed the goal to stand as Luca Unbehaun was subjected to a foul in the six-yard box in the build-up. An equally unfortunate second came four minutes later when Jordan Brown's shot from 18 metres took a deflection of Julius Schell. Reda Khadra pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute and BVB threw everything forward in the closing stages, creating two promising chances to restore parity – but Moukoko hesitated on the ball too long and Derby goalkeeper Bradley saved a Khadra free-kick. Derby's Louie Sibley rounded off the scoring with a goal on the counter in stoppage time.

"It was a deserved victory for Derby County. Unfortunately, we rarely found solutions to combat their desire, physicality and commitment. It was still quite decent in the first half, but going 1-0 up suited the English. After that they could make use of their power," summarised BVB youth coordinator Lars Ricken.

Head coach Michael Skibbe's charges can now place their entire focus on the Bundesliga. They are next in action away at Arminia Bielefeld on Sunday.

BVB: Unbehaun – Terzi (Amedick, 89), Ferjani, Schell, Göckan – Pherai (Hetemi, 78), Raschl – Knauff (Rauch, 78), Bakir (Gürpüz, 68), Khadra – Moukoko
