"Our work off the ball simply wasn't good enough," criticised Axel Witsel. Roman Bürki did not mince his words either: "Lots of things were not alright – and that's how a result like this happens." Here are the initial match reactions.

Axel Witsel: "I can't explain it. We weren't good, weren't aggressive. Hoffenheim had a lot more motivation. We didn't want to end the season like this, because that's not who we are. Today was a bad day, now we need to forget it quickly. Our work off the ball simply wasn't good enough. We all need to defend together, but if you're in a match where only a few players are running and defending, it's difficult to win the game. Nonetheless, it was a decent season for us. There's no shame in finishing behind Bayern. We'll give everything next season to challenge them once again."

Roman Bürki: "Already in the first 45 minutes you could see that there was a team out there that wanted it and needed it too – and a team that wasn't really up for it. That's what it looked like from the outside. That's not acceptable. It was an important match. We should all be happy that we're able to play here. Lots of things were not alright – and that's how a result like this happens. We followed up the bitter defeat at home to Mainz with a super performance against Leipzig. I wasn't expecting that we'd then be on the end of a 4-0 thrashing here today. We need to keep working on our winning mentality. That's the thing Bayern have more of than us. Over the course of a season it's the little things that are missing to be right at the top. We need to work on them."
