In their first game of the Traditions Cup, Borussia Dortmund defeated MSV Duisburg 5-1 (3-1). Lucien Favre's side face Feyenoord in their second game.

The hour-long match saw Ansgar Knauff (2), Gio Reyna, Thorgan Hazard and Jadon Sancho on target for Borussia Dortmund. Coach Favre had limited options when selecting which side to field: Zagadou, Meunier and Schmelzer were sidelined with injuries, Dahoud and Reus were back in Dortmund working their way back up to fitness, new loan signing Reinier had not yet joined the squad, while Bürki, Guerreiro, Can, Piszczek, Witsel, Brandt, Haaland, Wolf and Passlack were being spared for the second game of the day against Feyenoord. Hummels made his return to action and led the side out as captain.

Coach Lucien Favre opted for a 4-3-3 formation against the side that finished fifth in the 3. Liga last season and might well have won it had it not been for the the Coronavirus-enforced suspension of play (MSV were top of the table before the league was halted). Delaney played as a deep-lying midfield anchor, with Bellingham and Reyna in more advanced midfield roles.

The first chance of the game fell to Duisburg in the second minute: Vermeij just failed to get on the end of a cross in the six-yard box. Down the other end, Sancho was off target for BVB, who found themselves more and more in control of the match as the clock read ten minutes.

In the 13th minute, Hazard won the ball near the edge of the box and dinked an inch-perfect pass into the path of the onrushing Reyna, who applied the finishing touches to make it 1-0. Barely a minute later, Bellingham charged down the left-wing after a long ball from Delaney and played a cross into the box. Hazard was on hand to apply the finishing touches and double the Black & Yellow lead. Then, in the 26th minute, Sancho dribbled into the box and slipped the ball to Reyna, whose shot was blocked. However, the Duisburg defence couldn't clear their lines and the ball came back to Sancho, who sent a clinical finish past the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, down the other end, a goalkeeping error from Hitz gifted Duisburg a goal.

Hummels and Sancho were withdrawn at half-time, with Hippe and Knauff coming on to replace them. The latter would go on to play a big part in the second half. Reyna and Delaney both came close with free-kick attempts, with the former also just missing from open play. Then, in the 49th minute, the 18-year-old Knauff took a Delaney pass in his stride and fired home to make it 4-1. In the closing minutes, Akanji stepped up take a long-range free-kick. His spectacular effort looked to be going on only to bounce back off the upright. Fortunately for BVB, Knauff was well placed to pounce on the rebound and score the final goal to wrap up a 5-1 win.

The two sides will meet again in just three weeks time, when Borussia travel to Duisburg once again for the first round of the DFB Cup.
