Borussia Dortmund have drawn 1-1 with SC Paderborn in the first of two back-to-back friendlies held to mark the digital season opening ceremony. Pherai scored the only goal for the Black & Yellows.

Head coach Lucien Favre was without 10 players: Morey (torn muscle fibres in thigh), Guerreiro (muscular problems), Hitz (personal reasons), Reinier (fitness training), Reus (fitness training), Meunier (fitness training), Dahoud (fitness training), Zagadou (knee problems), Reyna (heel problems) and Schmelzer (rehab following operation). The Swiss tactician again opted for the 4-2-3-1 system he has used in the majority of the friendlies.

The two teams did not need much time to settle into this friendly at the Hohenbuschei training ground, with the first chance falling to BVB in only the third minute: Ansgar Knauff pounced on a misplaced pass and got a shot away, but it flew wide of the mark. The visitors had the next major opportunity in the fifth minute, only for Can to throw himself into the path of Srbeny's shot. The play increasingly shifted into the Dortmund half but despite winning several corner-kicks, Paderborn could not make them count. At the other end, Passlack went close from a narrow angle in the 11th minute and Sancho's free-kick was kept out by Huth two minutes later. Within 60 seconds, Michel had tested Bürki with a low shot that the BVB shot-stopper managed to block in time. In the 18th minute, Sancho was teed up by Haaland but Huth saved his strike from 14 metres and Knauff's follow-up effort was blocked.

Paderborn generally moved the ball with greater fluidity than BVB and looked to deploy quick switch play as their preferred method of attack. But the Black & Yellows countered well themselves too and almost opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Haaland set up Pherai, although he was unable to get the better of the goalkeeper. Borussia began to find their groove in the period that followed and that was immediately reflected on the scoreboard. Although Knauff was initially kept out by Huth in the 30th minute, Pherai was on hand to slot home the follow-up and make it 1-0. Huth was involved in several key moments in the minutes that followed, beating Haaland to the ball on 34 minutes and then denying Knauff two minutes later.

Borussia had a larger share of the possession in the second period but it was Paderborn who had the first opportunity, although substitute Pröger's 48th-minute attempt from a tight angle narrowly missed the bottom corner of the goal. Haaland went close five minutes later, though shot-stopper Huth was equal to his shot on the turn. A Sancho free-kick found its way to Knauff in the 56th minute of the match, but his attempt was blocked. The visitors then started to create chances with each passing minute, with Pröger hitting the bar on 62 minutes and Bürki backpedaling to make a save on 63 minutes. The Swiss custodian made another stop from Evans, who really should have levelled, three minutes later. He was powerless from the ensuing corner, however, with Pröger firing the ball into the Dortmund net to make it 1-1. Paderborn continued to attack, with Srbeny's 69th-minute shot from range flying narrowly wide of the goal.

Haaland had a goal ruled out for offside two minutes later. It was the last involvement for the striker, who came off in the 73rd minute along with Sancho. Broschinski and Hippe came on as Favre switched to a 4-3-3 formation. Striker Broschinski almost made the perfect introduction, but he missed from close range three minutes after coming off the bench. Despite stepping up their efforts, BVB did not create much aside from a Delaney shot in the 84th minute.

The second friendly fixture against VfL Bochum will kick off at 18:00 CET.
