Despite having led 15-13 at half-time, the Borussia Dortmund women's handball team lost their EHF Champions League home game against ŽRK Budućnost Podgorica 26-28.

Having made a cautious start and quickly fallen 3-1 behind, the team settled into their game, varied the tempo and took the lead for the first time after 10 minutes when Kelly Vollebregt put them 6-5 ahead. That lead was extended to four goals at one stage, with the Black & Yellows 13-9 up after 22 minutes, and by half-time they were 15-13 ahead.

It was initially a similar situation in the second period: BVB dominated the match, and when Alina Grijseels scored two goals in the space of 30 seconds to make it 22-17 and give her team a five-goal cushion with 39 minutes played, it looked as though the home side were on track for a victory. The fact that this young team once again threw away a comfortable lead in the final 10 minutes – as they had done at the same stage of their game eight days ago – must certainly be in part attributable to their inexperience.

If coach André Fuhr's side can play their brand of handball for the full 60 minutes on the international stage, then the results and points will surely follow.

The best throwers on the day were Lina Grijseels and Kelly Vollebregt, who both scored six goals.
