More challenges won (52%), more ball possession (60%), a better pass completion rate (84% vs. 76%) – Borussia Dortmund were the deserved victors in a match that was full of chances. There were 35 shots on goal in total, the majority of which (21) fell to Wolfsburg. Here are the match facts.

Match-winner: Jadon Sancho assisted the opener from a corner and then scored himself. It was the first time this season in the Bundesliga and the second competitive game in a row – after the cup tie in Braunschweig (also an assist and a late goal) – that he was involved in two goals. The 20-year-old scored his 31st Bundesliga goal – no other player has reached this mark at a younger age.

Goal-scoring defender(s): Manuel Akanji scored his second goal of the season and has already scored twice as often in 2020/21 as his first three Bundesliga campaigns put together. It was his first headed goal. The Switzerland international scored BVB's seventh goal by a defender this season – a league high. The Black & Yellow defenders have now scored more goals than the strikeforces of five other Bundesliga clubs.

Back in action: Despite not finding the net himself it was a successful comeback for Erling Haaland, who was involved in six shots on goal. Steffen Tigges, 22, replaced him from the bench and came close to scoring his first goal on what was his Bundesliga debut.

Strong record: Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in 11 Bundesliga games against Wolfsburg. They won for the 10th game in a row during that run, have taken 31 out of a possible 33 points against the Wolves and have leapfrogged the men from Lower Saxony in the table. It was BVB's eighth consecutive clean sheet against Wolfsburg. That is the joint longest such run in Bundesliga history, along with Bayern Munich's eight consecutive clean sheets against Eintracht Frankfurt between 2012 and 2016.

Defensive solidity: It is the sixth time this season – but the first time since their 2-0 win in Bielefeld on Matchday 6 – that BVB have kept a clean sheet.

Prolific after the break: Borussia have scored 23 of their 28 goals this season in the second half. (br)
