Borussia Dortmund will go into the final third of the season on the back of a 3-2 victory in Seville and their biggest away win in the derby since 1964 – but they are still six points behind third and fourth place in the Bundesliga table.

A gesture for the fans: Jadon Sancho.

"It won't be easy, but it's definitely still possible for us to achieve our goals," declared coach Edin Terzic at the end of this highly enjoyable week. BVB have 36 points on the board after 22 rounds of matches and sit in sixth place in the table. Above them are fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen (37) plus Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg, who occupy third and fourth spots respectively (42). With Union Berlin and Borussia Mönchengladbach (both 33) hot on their heels too, Terzic spoke of a "six-way battle" and added: "There's still a lot of work ahead of us."

But the past week has certainly raised hopes that they can make up the ground. "Over the two matches, we've shown what we're capable of if we do it together," explained captain Marco Reus. Emre Can also spoke of a "turnaround", but reiterated: "Every single one of us must be aware of needs to be done to achieve this."

Yesterday and today, they took to social media to celebrate what was a comfortable 4-0 victory in the 158th Ruhr derby – "the most emotional and important game of the season" (Emre Can). "This game means everything to the club," said Jadon Sancho. And because the fans were not allowed to be in the stadium to celebrate with the players, "I had to show them on camera that it was very important for us as well".

Now the coach and the players have a full week of preparations and fine-tuning ahead of their upcoming "triple-header", which will see the Black & Yellows take on Bielefeld and Bayern in the league either side of a DFB Cup quarter-final clash in Mönchengladbach. They can draw hope not only from the wins away to Sevilla and Schalke, but also from the impending return of several injury absentees. Thorgan Hazard, Dan-Axel Zagadou and Lukasz Piszczek all completed a light training session in sunny weather and spring-like temperatures on Sunday morning. (br)
