A few exceptions aside, Borussia Dortmund produced a focused performance and were largely compact in defence. But they had a rocky spell after the deficit was halved and subsequently conceded the equaliser. In the end, it was a slightly fortunate though not undeserved victory. Leipzig recorded 54% possession, while BVB had more shots (15-14). Here are the match facts.

Winning run: BVB have won five matches in a row for the first time this Bundesliga season.

Late goal: The 3-2 was the 19th goal BVB have scored in the final quarter of an hour – a league high.

Match-winner: Jadon Sancho completed the most sprints (34) and bagged his first brace of the season. He amassed his 13th and 14th scorer points of the 2021 calendar year on his 13th appearance (eight goals, six assists).

Driving force: Marco Reus was involved in eight shots (four shots himself, four assists) – more than any other player. The captain scored his 133rd Bundesliga goal and moved level with Giovane Elber in 21st place in the all-time goalscorer charts. All six Reus goals in the Bundesliga this season have put BVB in the lead (four for 1-0, two for 2-1).

Provider: Raphael Guerreiro set up both of Sancho's goals; he now has 11 assists in the Bundesliga this term and is the team's top provider.

Substitute: Roman Bürki got his first taste of action since 22 January – a 4-2 defeat in Mönchengladbach on Matchday 18.

Experienced: BVB lined up with their oldest starting XI in the Bundesliga this season (average age of 28.0).

Dismantled: Leipzig conceded 15 shots – more than every other Bundesliga game this season bar one: they also gave away 15 in the 3-1 loss in the reverse fixture. At the same time, it was the Saxony club's sixth Bundesliga defeat to BVB – the most losses they have suffered to one single opponent.
