It is still just an idea. An idea which formed at BVB over the past few weeks, with the season coming to an end and emotional goodbyes being said to Lukasz Piszczek and the Bender twins. All of this took place in front of empty stands - and should therefore be repeated in a setting worthy of the occasion.

''We have an idea that the first team can play against the double-winning team from 2012, and we hope this can take place in the summer of 2022,'' said Hans-Joachim Watzke (chief executive officer) in an interview with the Funke media group, adding: ''I hope this can be made a reality. We would like to say goodbye to all these players in front of our fans, and I know from talking to a lot of the guys that they would be really happy about a game like this.''

2022 will mark the tenth anniversary of the double win.

Sven Bender and Lukasz Piszczek won their first Bundesliga winners' medals with BVB in 2011 before claiming a domestic double of league and DFB-Pokal in 2012. They also won the latter competition in 2017. Both players drew the curtain on their Bundesliga careers last weekend; one of them in a Bayer Leverkusen shirt, the other after 11 years in Black & Yellow.
