On Wednesday at the European Championship, the last three Black & Yellows in Mats Hummels, Emre Can and Raphael Guerreiro made their debut appearances at the tournament. Unfortunately, only one of them had cause for celebration.

Germany went down 1-0 to France in the final game of the first round of fixtures on Wednesday evening. The only goal of the encounter was an own goal scored by Mats Hummels in the 20th minute. The defender sent the ball into his own net after attempting to clear his lines under intense pressure from striker Kylian Mbappé. Emre Can came on to replace Matthias Ginter in the 88th minute. Germany will pick things up on Saturday when they face reigning champions Portugal, including BVB full-back Raphael Guerreiro.

The Portuguese laid down a marker in Group F earlier on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Hungary. All three goals came in the closing stages of the game. Guerreiro gave his side the lead in the 84th minute with a left-footed shot before Cristiano Ronaldo added two further goals.

With one game played, Portugal lead group F. Germany find themselves placed third. (cr)
