The first BVB players reached the knockout stages of EURO 2020 on Monday evening. Both Belgium (Axel Witsel, Thomas Meunier and Thorgan Hazard) and Denmark (Thomas Delaney) claimed wins to secure progression through to the last 16 of the tournament. Four more Black & Yellows benefited from their Belgian BVB team-mates' success and qualified for the next round without even playing. Jadon Sancho then made his EURO debut on Tuesday evening.

Denmark pulled off a convincing 4-1 victory against Russia in the third and final group match of the European Championships to qualify for the Round of 16. Dortmund's Thomas Delaney was substituted off in the 86th minute.

Delaney & Co. were helped out by their Belgian colleagues, who struggled for a long time to break Finland down but ultimately ran out 2-0 winners and qualified from Group B as group winners with a maximum haul of nine points from three games. Axel Witsel made his comeback in the Red Devils' starting line-up, while Thomas Meunier came off the bench for the final quarter of an hour. Thorgan Hazard did not make the trip to St. Petersburg with the squad.

There were four more Black & Yellows who were celebrating qualification for the knockouts thanks to Belgium's victory on a special Monday evening: the final placements in Groups A, B and C mean that both Switzerland (Manuel Akanji and Gregor Kobel) and England (Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham) are sure of a place in the next round.

In the end, though, the Three Lions did not need assistance from elsewhere: England beat Czechia 1-0 on Tuesday evening to secure top spot in the group. Jadon Sancho made his EURO debut in the final group game. Coach Gareth Southgate brought the Englishman on in the 84th minute. His club team-mate Jude Bellingham had earlier come on in the 68th minute.
