Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has left the club’s training camp in Spain on Wednesday and returned to Germany.

Gündogan, who had been sidelined for a few months with a back problem, took part in full training in Spain for a few of days before he was struck down with bronchitis. He was put under “quarantine” and mostly stayed in his hotel room in the last couple of days, while his room-mate Oliver Kirch was given – to prevent contraction – a single room at the La Manga Club.

“Ilkay is on the road to recovery. Since he would not have returned to full training by the end of the training camp anyway, we jointly decided that he flies home where we can give him better medical treatment,” said BVB team doctor Markus Braun.

It was a busy morning for Dr Braun. During the early training session, he needed to straighten Nuri Sahin’s nose which the midfielder had broken in training. Sahin will sit out training on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday.

Sven Bender also had to pull out of the morning’s training session due to a dead leg he suffered in the first half of Tuesday’s friendly against Bochum. In spite of the injury, Bender started training on Wednesday morning but was forced to stop early. He will work out in the weight room in the afternoon, as will Sokratis who developed a pressure sore on the heel.
