Marcel Schmelzer provided a pin-point cross to set up BVB’s equaliser, but was forced off with an injury shortly before the end. In a post-game interview, the Dortmund defender talks about his injury and possible quarter-finals opponents.

Marcel, what is the overriding emotion: joy because BVB are through to the quarter-finals, or anger because you lost today?

It is definitely the joy of advancing to the quarter-finals. We are again among the best eight teams in Europe, which is great.

How did you experience the game?

It was a tough game. St Petersburg played well and made life tough for us. In the end it only matters that we are through to the next round.

What was the reason that it was such a tough game?

It was not only tough because we missed so many players, but also because some of us have been playing without a break for months. We are not as fresh as we usually are.

You were substituted with an injury shortly before the end. How are you doing?

I got tripped in a tackle, and I still feel pain in both groins. I can’t say much more, we have to wait for the MRI scan on Thursday.

The quarter-finals draw is on Friday. If you had a wish for this draw, what would it be?

There are a few teams in the last eight we haven’t played against yet, so it would be nice to face a side we don’t know. But we cannot influence the draw, so we will try to make the best of it. Everything is possible in the next round.
