Goal-line technology will not be used in the Bundesliga after the clubs of the German Football League (DFL) unfortunately rejected to introduce it at a meeting in Frankfurt on Monday.

Borussia Dortmund is careful to ensure that contrary to some newspaper reports on Tuesday, the club has been a keen advocate of goal-line technology and has, according to club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, “of course voted in favour of its introduction.”

BVB sporting director Michael Zorc already told pay TV channel Sky on Saturday that “we should be using a technique that works, that creates a more just world and does not distort the game. We will definitively vote in favour of it.”

BVB’s clear approval, however, does not alter the fact that the mission to introduce goal-line technology has failed to materialise as the required majority was not obtained. This means the league will continue to do without an instrument that would have contributed more fairness to the game and helped the referees in making crucial decisions.
