Borussia Dortmund’s success on the international stage, particularly in the past two years, is also reflected in UEFA’s club coefficient rankings where they have improved from 119th to 16th place in the Klopp era.

When the draw for the UEFA Champions League group stage is made at the end of August, and Borussia Dortmund claim a top-three finish in the Bundesliga as expected, the 1997 Champions League winners will be put into pot 2 for the first time in this millennium.

Borussia Dortmund, currently on 16th place in the club coefficient rankings, could still be leapfrogged by Juventus this season, but there are still four teams among the top 16 teams that are unlikely to qualify for next year’s competition. Valencia are currently 16 points off a Champions League spot in Spain, while in Italiy Inter and AC Milan are 14 and 22 points adrift, respectively. And in France, Lyon will need to close down a nine-point gap.

In the draw at the end of August, the best eight teams will go into pot 1 and the clubs ranked 9 to 16 16 into pot 2, with the lower-ranked teams going into the pots 3 and 4. In this season’s draw, BVB were in pot3, the year before in pot 4.
