Mats Hummels steered Germany towards victory against Portugal on Monday with his first goal at a World Cup. Rising almost eight feet (2.4 metres) into the air, he planted a powerful header into the net for his side's second goal of the afternoon. There are, however, injury concerns over the Dortmund centre-half.

“I took a knock to the thigh,” said Hummels after the match. “And unfortunately, I wasn’t able to run it off.” The injury forced him to come off in the second half, but Hummels is hopeful to be available again for Saturday’s match against Ghana. “You always have to be sceptical whether an injury is worse than first thought, but I hope I will be fine again in a couple of days.”

The German Football Association (DFB) stated on their website on Tuesday: “Hummels has sustained bruising to his right thigh with some bleeding into the surrounding muscles. Germany’s team doctors will wait to see how healing progresses before determining when the Dortmund centre-back can return to full training and whether he will be able to feature in Die Mannschaft’s second group match against Ghana in Fortaleza on Saturday.”
