Borussia Dortmund have won 14 Bundesliga matches in Gelsenkirchen. Only in Stuttgart have they racked up more away victories. A journey back in time.

Franz Brungs

01) 26/09/1964: "Much like a devastating natural disaster beyond the control of humankind, the waves of the Borussia Dortmund tsunami crashed down around the Schalke team," wrote kicker in the wake of BVB's first Bundesliga win at the Glückauf-Kampfbahn. The Black and Yellows were 2-0 ahead inside 10 minutes and 6-0 up before the break – still the biggest half-time lead in Bundesliga history – thanks to goals from Alfred "Aki" Schmidt, Goldköpfchen Franz Brungs (two), Timo Konietzka (two) and Lothar Emmerich. By full-time, the score was 6-2.

02) 18/09/1965: A five-goal thriller involving some questionable goalkeeping on both sides ended 3-2 in Borussia's favour as they beat their arch rivals for a second consecutive year. Dortmund twice took the lead through Emmerick and Geisler in the 42nd and 63rd minutes respectively, but Schalke responded immediately on each occasion through Herrmann and Pyka in the 45th and 64th minutes. Then, with the match evenly poised in the 70th minute, Schalke shot-stopper Mühlmann gifted the visitors a winner when he lost possession on the edge of his penalty area, allowing an ice-cool Emmerich, would later went on to hit the woodwork, to make it 3-2.

03) 29/04/1967: It was all plain-sailing for the Black and Yellows as they raced into a 3-0 lead courtesy of Emmerich, Weber and Paul. Kraus netted to reduce the deficit in the 64th minute, but former Schalke winger Stan Libuda, who had helped BVB to European Cup Winners' Cup success 11 months earlier, re-established the three-goal lead to hand the visitors a 4-1 win.

Manfred Burgsmüller

04) 01/04/1978: 11 years passed before Borussia's next three points in Gelsenkirchen. This time Manfred Burgsmüller was the standout performer, scoring twice in front of a 60,000 crowd at the Parkstadion.

05) 06/09/1980: Schalke's Wolfram Wuttke opened the scoring in the 27th minute but the Black and Yellows turned the game on its head in the closing stages thanks to goals from Mirko Votava (70) and Atli Edvaldsson (83).

06) 05/03/1983: Another comeback from Dortmund, with former Royal Blue Rüdiger Abramczik netting in the 63rd and 80th minutes to secure a 2-1 win and hand BVB all three points.

07) 28/10/1995: Following a 12-year spell in which there were no away wins and a handful of rather heavy losses at the Parkstadion, reigning German champions BVB were staring another derby defeat in the face after Youri Mulder had converted one of many chances to fire the hosts into a deserved 42nd-minute lead. But the Royal Blues were made to pay the price for failing to put the game to bed when Lars Ricken restored parity shortly before the interval. It was all Schalke in the second half, but Michael Zorc scored against the run of play in the 90th minute and BVB snatched a 2-1 win.

08) 02/11/1996: The following year the Black and Yellows were again victors in Gelsenkirchen, but this time deservedly. 71,021 fans saw a 3-1 win sealed by goals from Heiko Herrlich (16) and Stéphane Chapuisat (62, 64), with Martin Max netting for Schalke.

Weidenfeller und Rosicky

09) 14/05/2005: After a rather disastrous first half of the season, Borussia were enjoying the best second half of a season of any top-flight club ever when they travelled to Schalke in the final weeks of the campaign. They had not won in Gelsenkirchen for nine years, but that didn't stop the visitors from resorting to mind games and taking to the field in shirts displaying the date of this memorable encounter under their badge. The deadlock was broken when Kehl headed home a Rosicky corner, but Waldoch hit back with a 19th-minute equaliser. After that the Royal Blues were the better side but Roman Weidenfeller kept the visitors in the game with a string of impressive saves and Borussia Dortmund went 2-1 ahead against the run of play. Kringe broke into the box on the left but his shot rebounded off Heimeroth and back to him. Still on the floor, Kringe poked the ball back towards the penalty spot, where the onrushing Ricken met it to drill home a low effort. The second half was all about one man: Roman Weidenfeller saved the day, putting in an unbelievable performance that afternoon!

10) 19/09/2010: For the first time in ten years the Schalke stadium was not filled to capacity for the derby, but the 60,069 fans in attendance saw a footballing masterclass from the Black and Yellows, who were nonetheless only 1-0 ahead at the break thanks to Kagawa's 20th-minute strike. Subotic and Großkreutz both hit the crossbar, while Bender's strike was disallowed for offside. 12 minutes after the interval Kagawa doubled the lead, before Schalke were reduced to 10 men following Plestan's sending-off. Sahin (65) then became the third Dortmund player to hit the woodwork in a one-sided derby, before Lewandowski made it three with four minutes remaining. Huntelaar's 89th-minute goal was little more than scant consolation.

Black and Yellow delight: Kagawa (left) and Piszczek (right)

11) 14/04/2012: Another hard-fought derby: Farfan put the hosts ahead on the eight-minute mark, but Piszczek levelled the scores after a quarter of an hour and substitute Kehl made it 2-1 to BVB in the 63rd minute. The Black and Yellows did not let victory slip from their grip in the final half an hour, much to the delight of the 8,000 travelling fans.

12) 26/10/2013: The 12th and most recent of the Black and Yellow victories over Schalke came four years ago, but Borussia's on-pitch display was overshadowed by some rather ugly scenes off the pitch, with the poor conduct of a group of hooligans coming in for criticism. "We won 3-1 but we're still, quite rightly, having to talk about the scenes that took place before the match. They are ugly images, to put it mildly. At times like this you feel a sense of shame. I'm often proud of our fans but you can't get much more disruptive than they were today. We won in spite of them, not because of them," said Jürgen Klopp, whose team dominated in the opening half and deserved to take the lead but owed much to Roman Weidenfeller, who saved a penalty from Boateng in the 30th minute. In the second half Sahin doubled the advantage in the 51st minute and although Meyer pulled one back for Schalke just after the hour mark, Kuba scored a third to put the result beyond doubt on 73 minutes.

13) 08/12/2018: Thomas Delaney headed in the earliest derby goal since 1999 in the seventh minute. Schalke equalised from the spot on 61 minutes after a VAR decision, but "we kept calm, kept playing football, played even better, had more possession of the ball and more chances," said coach Lucien Favre, who was coach at the time, praising his team. Jadon Sancho scored the winner after a one-two with Raphael Guerreiro in the 74th minute.

14) 20/02/2021: Two goals on the stroke of half-time from Jadon Sancho (42) and Erling Haaland (45) respectively paved the way for BVB's biggest away victory over Schalke 04 in more than 56 years. Borussia, who had been clearly superior but not shown any real penetration up until that two-goal salvo, survived a couple of close shaves after the interval but then pulled away into a 4-0 lead thanks to a strike from Raphael Guerreiro (60) and another goal from Haaland (79).
