Poland against Germany, a fixture one player in particular had set his sights on: Jakub Blaszczykowski. After making a surprise comeback for his national team in a friendly at the start of August, the Poland skipper was looking forward with great anticipation to the Euro qualifier against Germany in Warsaw on Saturday.

But it was not meant to be for Blaszczykowski as he suffered a torn thigh muscle, ruling the Borussia Dortmund midfielder out until November. It is, however, still a special game for BVB, with Lukasz Piszczek and former BVB striker Robert Lewandowski featuring for Poland, and Roman Weidenfeller, Mats Hummels, Erik Durm and Matthias Ginter wearing a Germany shirt on Saturday.

“I’ve only played 20 minutes against Germany so far. It was at the Euro 2008 in Austria,” said Lukasz Piszczek. “We lost 2-0. Poland actually have never won against Germany, but I hope we can do it this time. It’s going to be tough as Germany are the World champions after all.”

You will meet up with Robert Lewandowski in the Poland camp. Have you two spoken since his departure?

“We only spoke again when Bayern came to Dortmund for the Supercup match. That’s the way it goes in professional football, it’s totally normal.”

Whatever has happened to “Lolek and Bolek“?

“This is a tough topic for me to talk about as Kuba and I haven’t played together for over a year. We get along well, both on and off the pitch. We are great buddies. I hope he recovers quickly. He had been in such fine form when his injury happened. I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.”
