Jürgen Klopp expected “a battle” at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, but his side was far from showing a battling performance on Saturday. BVB weren’t aggressive enough, while their attacking efforts lacked invention, and in all fairness it has to be said, it was not an undeserved victory for Hertha BSC.

Jürgen Klopp: “A first half like that shouldn't have happened. We weren’t determined enough, and that in a game where so much was a stake. We have another two games this year to dramatically improve our situation for the second half of the season. That’s our mission now.”

Marcel Schmelzer: “We really have to start picking up three points away from home again. We always do a first step, like against Gladbach or Hoffenheim, but then screw it up again. It’s a shame for the team and the fans. We really need to start getting results again.”

Disappointed BVB players after the game at Hertha.

Jos Luhukay (Hertha coach): “Only football can write stories like that. Julian Schieber’s goal was fantastic. It’s brilliant that we can celebrate a win and three points today. We knew that we would have to defend as a team. It’s a great achievement for the team and the fans. Unlike against Bayern, we tried to win from the beginning."

Julian Schieber (ex-BVB man): “It was very emotional for me to see how the match progressed, also after my goal. I’m very happy that we've won this game. We were very solid in defence and scored a goal. But I have to admit it was hard to see my old teammates suffering. It was a difficult situation for me.”
