"leuchte auf" Foundation supports Dortmund's maternity hospitals with BVB baby sleeping bags

Not only since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic has health been an important part of BVB's social commitment. As in previous years, the BVB Foundation "leuchte auf" is therefore supporting Dortmund's clinics with Black and Yellow baby sleeping bags this year. The latest donations will benefit the smallest people at Klinikum Dortmund, Klinikum Westfalen and the St. Josefs Hospital.

For many years, Borussia Dortmund and the foundation have recognised the great need to work to prevent one of the most common causes of death in newborns: sudden infant death syndrome. This occurs most often between the second and fourth months of the baby's life and is the most common cause of death in the first year after birth, according to the Robert Koch Institute. Thanks to the donation of the sleeping bags to the three clinics, numerous families can now make sure their little ones have the safest sleep possible.

The initiative was started in 2016 with 1,000 sleeping bags for Klinikum Dortmund, and the number of sleeping bags donated has now risen to over 5,000. With this year's donation to the three clinics, the hospitals will be provided with an additional 3,800 sleeping bags, so Dortmund's maternity wards will be able to give them to all newborns for the next twelve months.

It is often not possible for socially disadvantaged families in particular to provide the children with adequate materials. However, it is particularly important for newborns and young children that, for example, they are not provided with inferior products during their rest periods or that they spend their time in their beds at an insufficient temperature. The use of sleeping bags prevents this risk. Parents should also use the following tips to ensure that their children sleep as safely as possible:

  • The baby should sleep in a sleeping bag, without an additional blanket and without a hat when in the house
  • The baby should always sleep on his/her back
  • Ensure a smoke-free environment
  • Make sure the bedroom is not too warm
  • The baby should sleep in his/her own (bedside) cot, not in the parents' bed
      -> Firm, air-permeable mattress
      -> No pillows/cot bumper
      -> No cuddly animals
      -> No hot water bottle
      -> No fur

With the latest donation, BVB and "leuchte auf " are once again underlining the importance of contributing to the health and well-being of the youngest in our society.
