In front of a crowd of over 70000 fans, BVB took a while to find their game. In fact, the first goal was a little unexpected when Barrios opened the scoring on 31 minutes. Thereafter goals from Großkreutz (38.), Hummels (65.), Lewandowski (75.) and to finish off the game Barrios (88.) secured a well-deserved win and thus registered BVB´s eighth win in nine games this season.
The Scenario:
Third plays sixth: The last time this fixture had an influence on the top of the table was in 2002. Having opened their campaign with maximum points against Cologne and Munich, Kaiserslautern had drawn subsequent games against Mainz and Hoffenheim. Going into today´s game BVB had made their best start since the 01/02 season.
Personnel Matters:Kehl, Dede, Hajnal, Zidan and Kringe were missing for BVB whilst Kaiserslautern were missing Simunek, Amri and Rivic lining up in the same formation as they had done in theor 2-2 draw with Hoffenheim. Klopp opted to make two changes from the side that won in Schalke with Piszczek and Kuba replacing Owomoyela and Götze.
Tactics:
Dortmund´s standard 4-2-3-1 lined up against a 4-4-2 formation with Kirch and Ilicevic lining up alongside Tiffert and Bilek when BVB had the ball. This meant that Sahin and Bender had pretty much free rein to dominate the flanks.
The Game and Analysis:
"We want no mistakes and to maintain our home record," said Klopp during the press conference in the run up to the game on Tuesday. It was clear that the team was not going to be allowed to glory in the afterglow of their game against Schalke on Saturday and had to ensure a solid start to the season.
However, BVB started sluggishly. The visitors managed to put BVB under some considerable pressure in the opening phase of the game and had a few chances to score however Weidenfeller was able to deal efforts from Kalic (6 mins) and von Jessen (9 mins) whilst at the other end Schmelzer, latching onto a Weidenfeller clearance was able to cross for Barrios only to see him head over from close in.
Gradually BVB took control. They took control of the midfield and so created chance after chance. Sippel in the visitors´ goal denied first a header from Kagawa, then a shot from Großkreutz and all this before 30minutes had been played. A minute later, however, a long ball from Sahin played in Barrios who was able to outflank the defence to eventually outwit Sippel and register the opening goal.
BVB maintained the pressure. Whilst Kaiserslautern created nothing,BVB had chance after chance at the other end.
After Sippel had denied first Schmelzer (34 mins) and then Sahin (35 mins) it was time for the next death-rattle to ring out as BVB scored twice in no time at all. The visitors, "The Red Devils", were anything but devilish after the first ten minutes. On 38 minutes a sublime pass from Sahin to Großkreutz on the left gave him the chance to deliver a strike that the ´keeper could get his fingers to, but not stop, and so, within seven minutes, BVB had made victory safe in the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
The half-time whistle went to sign off a first half during which BVB, having endured a first ten minutes finding themselves hustled to dominate. The visitors showed the occasional weakness at the back and by the end of the half had little answer to the ´Black ´n´ Yellow´ tide. The half-time lead was thoroughly deserved.
The second half started with more of the same. BVB applied pressure and the visitors were particularly troubled by a midfield orchestrated by Sahin. On 47 and 49 minutes strikes from Sahin and Sippel almost furthered the lead.
Chances to increase the lead were legion. Großkreutz, having yet again got past Dick found Kagawa only to see him be thwarted by Sippel. Shortly after that, Piszczek shot narrowly wide and then headers from Bender and Kagawa just failed to widen the lead. Only an hour had been played.
At the other end a vague chance on the hour saw Weidenfeller clutch to his chest a loose ball in his 199th Bundesliga fixture.
Just four minutes later a Sahin free-kick was missed by a flailing Sippel leading to Hummels winning a scuffle for possession to make it 3-0.
Anyone who thought that Klopp´s side would take the chance to take it easy now, with the win secured and with so many games on the agenda, could not have been more wrong. Götze and Lewandowski replaced Kagawa and Großkreutz and soon the visitor´s net was rustling again! A driven cross from Kuba was allowed by Barrios to run to Lewandowski who comfortably beat Sippel to make it 4-0 on 75 minutes.
The win was finally secured two minutes from the end when Piszczek found Barrios alone in the box and he made it 5-0. It was a classic performance from a team that carried the euphoria of the Derby win over Schalke into the game. They played great football and the win was thoroughly deserved. It will do wonders for confidence going forward!
