What results will BVB need to go through? Can Borussia still win the group? And what advantage would that give them? What happens if BVB are knocked out? BVB.de has received a lot of emails with questions from fans in the last couple of days. Here are the 09 most important questions and answers…

01 | What results will BVB need to go through?

BVB will go through if they get the same result as SSC Napoli against Arsenal FC. If the Italian side win their match, Borussia have to beat Marseille as well. If Napoli get a draw, BVB also need a draw to advance. If Napoli lose, BVB will definitely advance to the last 16.

02 | Will the game only be shown on Sky television in Germany?

No, the game in Marseille will also be shown live on the ZDF TV channel.

03 | Can BVB still win the group?

Yes. If they beat Marseille and Arsenal lose to Napoli.

04 | Will BVB get more prize money for winning the group?

No. For reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, each team – no matter if they finish first or second in their group – is awarded 3.5 million euros in prize money.

05 | What advantage would BVB get from winning the group?

In the round of the last 16, the winning team from one group plays against the runners-up from another group, with the group winners also having home field advantage in the crucial second leg. If they win their group, BVB would not, as of today, meet Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris St. Germain, Chelsea FC, Atletico Madrid or FC Barcelona in the first knockout round. And teams from the same association may not be drawn against each other as well.

06 | Do group winners get more extra points?

No. Clubs that reach the round of 16 are awarded five extra points for the five-year rankings – no matter if they finish first or second in their group.

07 | What happens if BVB are knocked out?

Then BVB will have to play in the Europa League where they would be drawn against a runner-up team from a Europe League group. In the 2012/13 season, Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League as holders – and went on the win the UEFA Europa League.

08 | How much money can be made in the UEFA Europa League?

Third-placed teams entering the UEFA Europe League can earn up to seven million euros in prize money – as well as approximately 6.5 million euros from the German ‘market pool’.

09 | Will yellow cards be waved after the group stage?

No. Robert Lewandowski and Sven Bender are currently both on two yellow cards. They would carry them into the knock-out stage and a third would see them suspended for the following match, regardless of the competition.
