He was between the sticks for the 1989 cup victory. He was the back-up shot-stopper in the golden era in the mid-1990s. Today, Wolfgang "Teddy" de Beer celebrates his 60th birthday.

Borussia Dortmund, Germany's first winner of a European competition and the Champions League, have claimed 16 "major titles". Wolfgang de Beer was involved in nine of those triumphs – as a first or second-choice goalkeeper and as a goalkeeping coach. "You have to have been in the right place at the right time," he said with a laugh, describing himself as a "conservative dumpling" with a consistently positive outlook on life. "I look after my things, stay calm, and like to make new friends but still have my old friends." He was and remains an approachable person. Close to the people. "I was always happy to lend an ear, I felt the pulse of the club."

He is still involved with the club of his heart today, in the Fan Department, and continues to commute from Dinslaken to Dortmund via the A2. "I was happy to accept the 40-minute drive." He still has a good number of years ahead of him.

Many happy returns on your 60th birthday, dear Teddy! (br)
