Borussia Dortmund finished their pre-season campaign unbeaten. In their 10th and final preparation match, BVB were held to a 1-1 (1-0) draw by second division TuS Koblenz in front of 7.396 fans on Tuesday night. New signing Lucas Barios marked his debut in a Black ´n´ Yellow shirt by scoring his first goal.

Often in possession of the ball: Lucas Barrios

Boris Rupert reporting from Koblenz
After injury-plagued Mainz 05 were forced to cancel the game, TuS Koblenz had only 48 hours left to organise this pre-season match. They did a great job, and surely earned a compliment from Jürgen Klopp. Not least because the BVB coach was glad to have a final opportunity to give new signing Lucas Barrios a chance to acclimatize and also to give another player a chance to shine on the vacant holding midfield spot. Due to Sebastian Kehl´s injury (torn groin muscle, ruled out for two weeks), Mats Hummels filled this role in Koblenz - a position he had also played in the 4-0 win over England in the final of Euro U21, putting in an outstanding performance.
Borussia´s defence struggled to compete in the opening exchanges and needed 15 minutes to get into the game. The entire team improved after a rather slow start and set up some fine passages of play. For example in the 33rd minute when the ball was passed accurately through the Koblenz penalty area and Hajnal quickly flicked the ball on to Barrios whose shot from nine yards was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Yelldell.
It was not Barrios´ first and definitively not his last good move of the game. After a shy start, the Argentinean showed his class: he ran a lot, won tackles and demonstrated his ball skills - and he also proved his nose for goals. After a long ball from Owomoyela, Barrios looked to the left, then ahead of him before lobbing the ball from 20 yards into the net to put Borussia 1-0 in front.

First game, first goal…

A deserved lead for BVB, who had their first big chance after 10 minutes when Owomoyela flicked on a Hajnal corner and Santana was twice denied by reflex saves of Yelldell, who also kept out a 32-yard hammer from Kuba in the 14th minute.
The striking duo of Barrios and Valdez played well together and were replaced by Rangelov and Zidan after 57 minutes. When was the last time BVB had such strong bench players?
So, even though Dede and Kehl are ruled out for the cup tie at Weiden on Saturday, BVB have plenty of alternatives available. Yasin Öztekin, who made a good impression in the pre-season, came on in the second half to play in the left full back position and BVB´s shooting star, Kevin Grosskreutz, also played the last 15 minutes.
The second half was a fairly uneventful affair. Melinho woke up the fans in the 73rd minute with a long-range effort that went just wide of the post, at the other end Zidan hit the woodwork after a solo run (78 mins) and then the unmarked Rangelov was denied by Yelldell. BVB paid the price for wasting their chances. Five minutes from time Hudoc headed home a Melinho free-kick to make it 1-1, leaving Ziegler no chance.
It wasn´t a brilliant "dress rehearsal" - but a solid performance. And the battle for places is in full swing.
BVB: Weidenfeller (46, Ziegler) - Owomoyela, Subotic, Santana, Schmelzer (46, Öztekin) - Hummels (73, Tinga) - Kuba (73, Kringe), Sahin (46, Feulner) - Hajnal (73, Großkreutz) - Barrios (58, Rangelov), Valdez (58, Zidan).
Goals: 0-1 Barrios (17), 1-1 Hudec (85).
