Borussia Dortmund kept their unbeaten streak in the preason alive with a 2-0 win over second-division new boys SC Paderborn, their sixth victory in seven friendlies. Dimitar Rangelov and Mohamed Zidan scored the goals, however, the best players in Borussia´s line-up were goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller and full back Felipe Santana.

Boris Rupert reporting from Paderborn
Two weeks before BVB´s first competitive match of the season in the DFB Cup at SpVgg. Weiden and three weeks before the Bundesliga start against Cologne, Jürgen Klopp fielded a team that closely resembled the one from Borussia´s successful run in the spring. With the exception of skipper Sebastian Kehl, who was able to train on Sunday, but was rested for the friendly, and Alexander Frei (moved to FC Basel), the starting line-up had familiar faces. After recovering from injury, goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller captained the team. Tinga replaced Kehl in the holding role in midfield and new signing Dimitar Rangelov played alongside Nelson Valde up front.
In the first half Borussia put in no more than a solid performance. Most of the action took place on the right side with Owomoyela, Kuba and Valdez, who also had some shots on goal, but the Bundesliga side barely created any chances. However, on and off the pitch (around 2.000 BVB fans set the tone), Borussia dominated the game, though the second division new boys held firm and kept the Black ´n´ Yellows at bay with good defensive work.

The first chance of the game came in the 28th minute when Rangelov connected to a cross from Dede, but his shot went just wide off the far post. Then Valdez missed a cross from Hajnal (34 mins.). At the end of the first half the game picked up pace. After a Dede cross, Valdez guided a fierce header on goal, but Paderborn´s goalkeeper pulled off a fantastic save for a corner (36). Hajnal whipped in the corner and Rangelov was on hand to power an unstoppable header into the net to put BVB 1-0 in front.
At the other end Guié-Mien won an aerial battle with Subotic, but Weidenfeller demonstrated his class with a brilliant save (42).
Jürgen Klopp showed at half-time that he took this game very serious, because, unlike previous preseason games, he didn´t change the entire team, but only made two changes:

Goalkeeper Roman Weidenfell, who also wore the captain’s armband, put in a solid performance.

the two U21 European Champions Schmelzer and Hummels came on for the two Brazilians Dede and the outstanding Santana, who gave the defence a solid look.
Schmelzer´s first tackle of the game almost led to a goal, but Roman Weidenfeller denied Löning with a great reflex save after narrowing the angle (47). At the start of the second half Paderborn had more of the game. One reason, surely, BVB´s intense training schedule with two sessions on Saturday and one on Sunday before the game.
Just seconds after coming on, Grosskreutz almost marked his birthday with a goal, but his shot went wide (66). The 21-year-old, who impressed again, played some fine crosses behind the strikers, did extremely well in one on one confrontations and also created a great chance for Valdez, who was denied by the second Paderborn goalkeeper Masuch (70).
Zidan was more successful a few minutes later, though he capitalised on two blunders by the Paderborn defence. After the home side clumsely gave the ball away, the BVB striker ran almost alone towards goal, rounded the goalkeeper, was then caught up by Holst, but the defender´s clearance fell at Zidan´s feet again, who then slotted the ball into an empty goal to make it 2-0.
BVB´s opposition in the remaining preseason games is getting more prominent. Next Saturday BVB take on Udinese Calcio and FC Valencia (45-minute matches) at the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, the following Tuesday (28 July) they play at Bundesliga new boys FSC Mainz 05.
