Since Wednesday evening, Real Madrid have been confirmed as Borussia Dortmund's opponents in the UEFA Champions League final on 1 June. The Spanish champions prevailed against Bayern Munich in the second semi-final.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, the Chairman of the Board at Borussia Dortmund, explained: "It goes without saying that I, as an official of the DFL, would've liked to see FC Bayern Munich reach the final and a repeat of the all-German final at Wembley. But we're now of course also looking forward to a final meeting with probably the biggest club in European Cup history – Real Madrid. The fact we will be reunited with Jude Bellingham at Wembley gives this final a very special flavour."

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl said: "We know that Real Madrid are a final machine. But we've also beaten PSG 1-0 two times, so why shouldn't we be able to do the same at Wembley?!"

Real Madrid drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich in the first leg of the semi-final. The Spaniards then ran out 2-1 winners at home in the second leg. The final at Wembley will mean a reunion with Jude Bellingham, who transferred to Real Madrid last summer. The two teams have previously faced each other in the Champions League on 14 occasions. BVB have claimed three victories and suffered six defeats. Five matches have ended in stalemate. The last meeting came in the group stages in the 2017/18 season (3-1 and 3-2 defeats). (cr)
