The Borussia Dortmund women's handball team will continue to be led by Henk Groener in the coming season: the Dutch coach has signed a contract extension to remain at the club until the summer of 2025.

Henk Groener has been the head coach of Borussia Dortmund's women's handball team since November 2022, and it has now been confirmed that he will remain at the club next season. The Dutchman signed a new contract this week that runs until the end of June 2025. In his first season in charge of BVB, the former international coach led the team to the European League Final Four, where they won the bronze medal.

"I'm looking forward to another year at Borussia Dortmund. We built up a good working relationship last season and this season. Both seasons were crazy, the last one in sporting terms and the current one due to numerous injuries. Despite all that, we are where we wanted to be, in the European places," said the 63-year-old, going on to add: "We're also closer to the top than we were a year ago. We are on the right track."

Groener also explains why the deal was not finalised sooner: "We were quick to come to an agreement, it just took a while to sign the contract. That had to do with the fact that we had other priorities." The composition of the new squad was particularly important for both the coach and the club. "But there were no doubts for us and now it's official," says Groener, who wants to play in the European League again with his team in the coming season.

Those responsible are delighted with the continuation of the working relationship. "We are delighted that Henk will continue to coach our team moving forward. We have been extremely happy with his work so far. We really appreciate the calmness that he radiates, especially in difficult phases, and which he also transmits to the team," says department head Rupert Thiele, adding: "That's why we are convinced that he is the right coach for our players."

Andreas Kuno agrees with his fellow board member: "Henk has been doing a really good job for a year and a half, you can see his signature in how the team play. We have a very variable defence, and are also flexible in attack," says the sporting director. For him, Groener's philosophy suits the club perfectly. "We want to develop young and talented players while also achieving success on the court. Henk has managed to do that so far and we are certain that he will continue to succeed."
