Borussia Dortmund are in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2013. Coach Edin Terzic's team, who will face Paris Saint Germain at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Wednesday, have overcome some big names over the course of the campaign. Here's a look back at Borussia's route to the last four of Europe's elite club competition.

Group stage

19.09.2023: Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 BVB

The Black & Yellows kicked off their 2023/2024 Champions League campaign with a defeat: PSG were clearly in control for the first 75 minutes at home, but only took the lead thanks to a controversial penalty that Kylian Mbappe converted shortly after half-time. Former BVB player Achraf Hakimi then quickly made it 2-0. It was only in the closing stages that BVB started to play with more confidence and create opportunities, but they were nonetheless unable to score.

04.10.2023: BVB 0-0 AC Milan

BVB put in a solid performance in their second Champions League game of the season, but were once again unable to find the back of the net. Felix Nmecha, who had been moved into the starting XI, was unable to make the most of a huge chance shortly before the final whistle. In the end, Borussia had Gregor Kobel to thank for saving a point with some strong saves in the closing stages.

25.10.2023: Newcastle United 0-1 BVB

Borussia travelled to St James' Park to face Group F leaders Newcastle United for the very first time. Both the English crowd and the 3,000 Dortmund fans who had travelled with the team created a fantastic atmosphere. Fuelled by the noise from the stands, Borussia Dortmund held on to a 1-0 win thanks to a Felix Nmecha goal in the second half to secure their first win of the Champions League season.

07.11.2023: BVB 2-0 Newcastle United

Niclas Füllkrug put Borussia, who were without their injured captain Emre Can, ahead in the 26th minute. After the break, however, Newcastle ramped up the tempo. A game that had been dominated by BVB up to that point turned into an end-to-end affair. However, Julian Brandt finished off a counter-attack to make it 2-0 with just over ten minutes remaining, allowing Borussia to take a very important step towards the round of 16 - seven points on the board after four matches in Europe's elite.

28.11.2023: AC Milan 1-3 BVB

BVB not only deserved to win 3-1 at the venerable Giuseppe Meazza stadium in Milan; they also secured an early place in the round of 16 thanks to goals from Marco Reus, who scored from the penalty spot, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi. But Dortmund, who put in a commanding performance despite a number of players out injured, were still not satisfied: "The aim is to win the group," said sporting director Sebastian Kehl after the final whistle.

13.12.2023: BVB 1-1 Paris Saint-Germain

BVB had Paris Saint-Germain on the ropes in their final game of the group stage, but when all was said and done, the scoreboard at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK read 1-1. The first half was a high-quality contest with numerous big chances for both sides, though ultimately there were no goals scored. These came in the second half: first Karim Adeyemi got the fans off their seats in the 51st minute, then Warren Zaire-Emery equalised five minutes later for PSG. But conceding the goal did nothing to alter BVB's position at the top of the "Group of Death".

Round of 16

20.02.2024: PSV Eindhoven 1-1 BVB

At the home of his former club, Donyell Malen scored the opener with a fine individual effort. But Luuk de Jong's equaliser from the penalty spot set Borussia back after the game had already started with bad news: Gregor Kobel had to pull out due to a muscular problem. Substitute Alexander Meyer, who had at least guessed the right corner for de Jong's penalty, did a good job at marshalling the defence to put BVB in a good position for the second leg at home.

13.03.2024: BVB 2-0 PSV Eindhoven

In the end, it was the fans in the stadium who spurred Borussia on to victory and into the quarter-finals. "When you have a stadium like this behind you, you feel like you're unbeatable," said Niclas Füllkrug after the final whistle. The advantage opened up by Jadon Sancho's opening goal in the third minute was preserved by Gregor Kobel, who made a number of strong saves in the second half. Marco Reus then sealed the Black & Yellows' place in the quarter-finals with a goal in the 95th minute.

Quarter-finals

10.04.2024: Atletico Madrid 2-1 BVB

Borussia had set their sights high for the first leg in Madrid - so there was great frustration in the Black & Yellows camp when Dortmund found themselves 2-0 down after just over half an hour. However, substitute Sebastien Haller's goal in the 81st minute gave Dortmund renewed hope and - spurred on by the goal - Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Julian Brandt both came close to netting a late equaliser.

16.04.2024: BVB 4-2 Atletico Madrid

By 22:53, there was no stopping the party in Dortmund: the referee had blown his whistle for full time, BVB had beaten Atletico Madrid 4-2 and were on their way to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 11 years. They couldn't have done it in a more dramatic fashion. First-half goals from Julian Brandt and Ian Maatsen fired BVB into a 2-0 lead at the break, but an own-goal by Mats Hummels and a finish by Angel Correa levelled the game on the night and put Atletico back on top on aggregate. Understandable then why the celebrations were so jubilant following goals by Niclas Füllkrug and Marcel Sabitzer to clinch the tie.
