Marcel Sabitzer and Niclas Füllkrug were victorious with their national teams on Saturday night. Austria and Germany registered wins in their first games of 2024, with the European Championship taking place in the summer.

Marcel Sabitzer wore the captain's armband for Austria in their friendly clash with Slovakia. Leipzig's Christoph Baumgartner put Austria ahead after just a few seconds, with substitute Andreas Weimann (West Bromwich Albion) making it 2-0 in the 82nd minute. Sabitzer played the full 90 minutes.

Austria are next in action on Tuesday, when they host Salih Özcan's Turkey (kick-off 20:45 CET).

The Germany national team got off to a flying start in their game against France. Just eight seconds had been played when Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz rattled a shot in off the underside of the crossbar from 20 metres out to give Germany the lead. Coach Julian Nagelsmann's side put in a solid performance against the 2022 World Cup runners-up and were rewarded with a second goal in the 49th minute, scored by Kai Havertz of Arsenal. Both sides made numerous substitutions in the second half. Niclas Füllkrug came on as an 80th-minute substitute to replace Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich). The BVB striker helped Germany see out a 2-0 win.

Germany will pick things up on Tuesday (20:45 CET) with a friendly against Donyell Malen and the Netherlands.
