Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern Munich 2-0 (0-0) in an intensive and, for the most part, captivating 2019 DFL Super Cup final thanks to goals from Paco Alcácer and Jadon Sancho! It is the seventh time BVB, who previously won this fixture in 1989, 1995, 1996, 2008, 2013 and 2014, have taken home the trophy.

The Black & Yellows were without Hummels, who postponed his comeback for a week after reporting some minor muscular problems following the morning training session, as well as Bürki (laceration on his shin), Morey (dislocated shoulder), Brandt (adductor complaint) and Hazard (ankle problems). The latter two had returned to training following their respective injuries but were not yet match-fit, meaning left-back Schulz was the only one of the five new arrivals to feature.

In a Super Cup final that thrilled from the first whistle, BVB kept the crowd on the edge of their seats by launching a series of high-speed counter-attacks. Bayern pressed high and Dortmund took full advantage of the space, creating three excellent chances in the first 20 minutes. The first came after only 50 seconds when Alcácer robbed Süle and hooked the ball into the path of Guerreiro, who raced towards the byline and cut the ball back to the onrushing Reus. His precise strike was kept out by Neuer, however. The next opportunity came with barely a quarter of an hour on the clock: Sancho played a long but precise pass from his own half towards Alcácer, who brought the ball down well and from a good 30 metres out poked it past Neuer with the goalkeeper well out of his area. Unfortunately, it trickled narrowly wide of the post. The third major chance for BVB, who lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation with Witsel and Weigl as the defensive midfield duo, came on the 20-minute mark when Guerreiro's shot inside the box was blocked by Neuer's foot.

Bayern press on the stroke of half-time

But there were also goalscoring chances for Bayern – who themselves enjoyed lengthy periods of pressure and the lion's share of possession (59 percent) in the first half – as the opening 45 minutes drew on. Lewandowski's effort was turned behind for a corner on 18 minutes, while Toprak and Hitz combined to prevent Coman from putting the Bavarians ahead on the 23-minute mark. While Dortmund had three huge chances in the opening 20 minutes, the rest of the first half belonged to Bayern.

The second half began just as the first had – with a major chance for Dortmund. This time, however, it was taken. Sancho won the ball back on the half-way line and drove forward until he was level with the box before squaring to Alcácer, whose strike nutmugged Tolisso before hitting the net (48). At the other end, Hitz made a splendid save to deny Müller from 14 metres (55) and made another stop from Lewandowski before Akanji and then, a tenth of a second later, Toprak teamed up to deny Coman an equaliser (58).

Sancho assists the first and scored the second

Toprak's clearance in his own penalty box started the move that led to the second goal for BVB, who launched a lightning-quick counter. Guerreiro made a superb pass with the outside of his foot that beat the Bayern defence and found Sancho on the right. The Englishman carried the ball forward before firing a shot from eight metres out through Neuer's legs to make it 2-0 (69). A short while later, Kimmich was lucky to escape with a booking rather than being sent off for a kick on Sancho, despite the presence of VAR (75). But it was little more than a sidenote on an otherwise wonderful evening of football.
