BVB foundation pledges support for inclusive holiday project
In 2017, the BVB foundation "leuchte auf" continued its support for an inclusive holiday project run by Diakonisches Werk Bethanien, a social welfare organisation, by pledging another donation of EUR 5,000. DWB has been running the project, aimed at disabled and non-disabled children in Dortmund and the surrounding area, for several years now.
In previous years, the project Ferien ohne Koffer (Holidays without suitcases) has always taken place in the summer holidays and has seen two groups of children – in which severely handicapped and severely ill youngsters have also been among those cared for by specially trained teachers and paediatric nurses – making a holiday excursion to a farm in Dortmund.
In 2017, the Diakonisches Werk Bethanien expanded the leisure programme by running the initiative in the Easter and autumn holidays as well.
Together with their supervisors, the children spent some time at a farm in Sauerland. The carefree nature of the excursion allowed the youngsters to take a break from their everyday lives, which can often be very stressful. Among other things, they cooked and baked together at the farm. The diverse programme also involved an excursion to an inclusive climbing park where all of the children had the opportunity to test out their climbing skills.
Through the involvement of both handicapped and healthy children, as well as those with severe illnesses and in some cases critical care requirements, the project "Holidays without suitcases" stands out due to its inclusive nature. For the organisers, it is very important that all participants come together to take part in activities, thus allowing all the children to have fun together. "Having again renewed our support for the project "Holidays without suitcases", it is wonderful to see that the offering has even been expanded this year," said an impressed Marco Rühmann, the Foundation Manager at the BVB foundation.
