Streetworker-Café shines in new splendour with help from "leuchte auf"
The Dortmund based association "Bieber.Burmann for you e.V. (registered association)" has engaged in charitable projects in Dortmund since 2016. The association has given particular attention to the renovation of leisure facilities for young people. In the middle of November, renewal works at the Streetworker-Café in Leopoldstraße were completed. The BVB foundation "leuchte auf" ("light up") made a contribution of €5,000 towards the required redevelopment.
The Streetworker-Café is a shelter for young persons without a home. They are able to turn to employees at the youth welfare facility and are provided with care there on a regular basis. These young people normally have only loose connections with their families. As a result, the social workers are a couple of the few trusted persons to whom they can repeatedly turn if they need advice or direct help.
The shelter has offered refuge for up to 100 young persons without a home for 18 years already, as well as a degree of stability that otherwise is often lacking in their lives. In the course of time, the need to renovate the space has grown ever larger, something which could only be gone about inadequately up until now.
"Bieber.Burmann for you e.V." took on this renovation work in the spring of 2018. The association organised, among other things, the complete renewal of the sanitary facilities. Furthermore, the institution received a brand-new communal kitchen. Efforts were also made to provide cupboards and shelving in order to increase what had been until now limited storage space for food and clothes donated to the homeless. Lockers have also been installed so that the young persons can store their personal belongings securely. Moreover, your eye is captured by the medical equipment that the centre now has at its disposal. This has been enlarged so that visitors to the café can be provided with superior medical treatment in future. A street artist has given the entrance area to the centre an attractive new look with a large-scale graffiti design. The result is that the once dismal facade is now unrecognisable. What is particularly nice in this regard is that special emphasis was placed on incorporating the sights of Dortmund – and, of course, on BVB – as part of the works.
The comprehensive renovation, during which every single room at the centre received attention, would not have been possible without the energetic support of many Dortmund trade firms. "leuchte auf" supported the project with a financial contribution, and, in doing so, made sure that some of the materials required could be purchased.
