4,184 spectators were at Stadion Rote Erde on Sunday afternoon to see the Borussia Dortmund U23s get their first win of the campaign. Mike Tullberg's charges beat relegated outfit SF Lotte 2-1 thanks to goals from Mory Konate and Steffen Tigges on Matchday 2 of the Regionalliga season.

The pre-match scenario: Both teams had lost their opening matches of the season last weekend, with Borussia Dortmund succumbing to a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to RW Essen and Sportfreunde Lotte on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline against promoted outfit Haltern.

The personnel: While Lotte went into this match with a threadbare squad, BVB had everyone at their disposal. Only long-term injury absentees Julius Schell and Haymenn Bah-Traore were unavailable for selection. Mike Tullberg made only one change to the team that lost to Essen, introducing Julian Schwermann in place of Dominik Wanner in the back four.

The first half: Both teams needed a quarter of an hour to settle into their rhythm and it wasn't until the 16-minute mark that Joseph Boyamba had the first goalscoring opportunity of the game with a left-footed shot from around 20 metres following a solo run down the right. His shot was deflected behind for the first corner of the game by a Lotte defender, however. From the ensuing set-piece, Taylan Duman sent a floated cross into the box and when Lotte's Alexander Langlitz headed the ball against his own bar, Konate was in the right place at the right time to head home the opening goal to put the Black & Yellows 1-0 ahead.

BVB dominated proceedings in the period that followed, enjoying more possession and repeatedly posing a threat going forward. The visitors, meanwhile, looked toothless in attack and only threatened from set-pieces, with their best chance a Marcell Sobotta free-kick from 17 metres out that was blocked by the wall. With half-time approaching, Chris Führich had a chance to double the advantage but the young midfielder's effort was kept out by Alexander Eiban in the Lotte goal and the half-time whistle blew with BVB holding a slender but deserved lead.

The second half: The Black & Yellows made a flying start to the second period and extended their advantage in the 48th minute when Marco Rente played in Steffen Tigges with a long aerial pass. The forward outpaced his opponent, the centre-back Rahn, and comfortably slotted home to make it 2-0. But BVB could count themselves fortunate a minute later when Lotte's Erhan Yilmaz struck the woodwork from around 20 metres. Steffen Tigges narrowly missed an opportunity to put the result beyond reach with a shot on the hour-mark following a counter-attack, with Lotte throwing more men forward and leaving themselves vulnerable. Midway through the second period, BVB spurned further chances – the best of which fell to Chris Führich in the 65th minute. But his close-range effort was cleared for a corner and he was also denied by the post from 16 metres five minutes later.

BVB boss Mike Tullberg made his first personnel change on the 80-minute mark, handing the Dane Magnus Kaastrup his competitive debut in a BVB shirt. The visitors did manage to pull a goal back with the very last chance of the match, however, with Marcell Sobotta tapping a deflected loose ball over the line. But BVB comfortably held onto their lead in the final seconds and ultimately recorded a deserved victory.

Here's what BVB coach Mike Tullberg had to say: "I'd like to express my thanks to every fan here at the stadium. We weren't good in the opening minutes. I mentioned that at half-time. I expect us to be courageous and to play quick football. But the second half ended up being excellent, we really played our football. I would particularly like to praise Maximilian Hippe, who is a centre-back by trade but played brilliantly down the right-hand side. In the end I'm happy with the win, that's for sure."

Outlook: The Borussia Dortmund U23s will next be in action on Friday when they visit Wuppertaler SV at the Stadion am Zoo. That match will kick off at 19:30 CET – shortly before the senior team face KFC Uerdingen in the DFB Cup.
