In front of a crowd of around 400 at Rote Erde stadium, Borussia Dortmund's U23 side slipped to a 5-1 derby defeat. Chris Führich had fired BVB into the lead after fifteen minutes but Schalke turned the game on its head in the second half.

How the teams stood before the game: Borussia's U23 side followed up last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Bonner SC with a 3-0 defeat against Alemannia Aachen in midweek. The Blue and White visitors lost their last game against fellow promoted side Haltern.

Team news: Eric Oelschlägel had to travel at short notice to Gelsenkirchen to sit on the bench in the Bundesliga derby as first team goalkeeper Roman Bürki was ruled out because of illness. After Wednesday’s game Marco Hober and Maximilian Hippe started on the bench. Compared to the game against Alemannia Aachen, BVB coach Mike Tullberg reverted to a 4-3-3 system with Gianluca Rizzo also on the bench. First team squad member Mateu Morey slotted in at right-back for the U23s.

How the match went:The Black and Yellows started the game well with Finssonn, playing in midfield for the first time, enjoying a good chance after around ten minutes. Both teams wanted to play nice football, but this was difficult on a heavy pitch. BVB were rewarded for their committed early play when they took the lead with a goal by Chris Führich. Captain Joseph Boyamba dynamically set up the goal, playing the key pass as he was falling to the ground. Führich finished from close range past the visitors’ goalkeeper into the far corner of the net. The lead was deserved up to that point because BVB were controlling the game and S04 were second best. The visitors tried to disrupt Dortmund’s flow with a lot of fouls and the quality of the game gradually decreased. BVB went into the break leading 1-0.

45 minutes to forget

From a black and yellow point of view, the second half was one to forget. Suddenly, nothing came off for BVB, while everything went to plan for the visitors from Gelsenkirchen. A debatable penalty brought Schalke back into the game six minutes after the restart. In the end, the visitors managed to score another four goals, resulting in a bitter defeat for BVB.

BVB coach Mike Tullberg was naturally disappointed after the game: "We went into a 1-0 lead and then enjoyed numerous opportunities on the counter attack that we did not make the most of. After the equaliser, you could see how unsure we are at the moment. In a game like this, you have to show more mentality, you cannot fall apart like we did. As a team now we have some tough challenges ahead. It’s my job now to improve the situation."

Next game: Next weekend (2 November) our U23 side visits SC Verl for a 2pm kick off.
