Roman Bürki has been the BVB shot-stopper since 2015, and has since made a total of 205 appearances between the sticks. The club and player are now on the verge of prematurely extending his contract, which is set to expire in June 2021.

"We're in good talks with Roman," confirmed sporting director Michael Zorc in the aftermath of a 1-0 Bundesliga victory in Düsseldorf that was secured in large part thanks to a strong save by Bürki. Zorc continued: "We've reached a final agreement and will finalise the contract extension – i.e. sign the contract – in the coming days. I'm absolutely delighted that we'll have Roman in goal for us for several more years."

The 29-year-old Swiss custodian is confident "that we'll find a date next week to get the contract extension done, because I simply feel very happy here. Throughout all the years that I've now been here, I've gone through a lot and yet I've still always felt the love from the club. I'm absolutely delighted."

With a return to the Champions League already on the horizon, Bürki said: "We want to continue winning our remaining matches and produce good performances. It's fantastic that we almost have the Champions League in the bag and that we'll be able to play in it again next season." (br)
